How to Cook Zucchini Flowers (with your Kids)

Posted by Gino Barbaro on

In this video the kids and I are demonstrating how to cook freshly picked zucchini flowers. We recommend picking the flowers and cooking them as soon as possible because the flowers deteriorate quickly once refrigerated.

In this recipe, we have omitted flour from the batter for a healthier product, although the flour does allow the egg to adhere much easier to the zucchini flower.

  • 2 eggs
  • 1Tablespoon parsley
  • 1Tablespoon grated cheese
  • S & P to taste
  • 12-15 zucchini flowers
  • Small pieces of cheese to stuff flowers

Begin by cleaning the flowers by removing any dirt or bugs. Stuff each flower with a small piece of cheese.

Beat eggs and incorporates salt, pepper and grated cheese.

Add flowers and mix well. Heat 1/2 cup olive oil in a sauté pan. Once oil is hot, gently place flowers into the oil away from you to avoid splattering.

Allow the flowers to develop golden color and then flip onto other side.

Frying should take about two minutes in hot oil. Once flowers are done, remove from oil and place on a plate with paper towel. Towel will soak any excess oil. You can sprinkle additional salt onto the flower eat immediately.

If you decide to eat later, either reheat the zucchini flowers or place flowers in a baking dish, ladle a touch of marinara sprinkle a touch of cheese and bake in a 400° oven for five minutes.

What a yummy summer treat!
